Behold the Shining Face of God
The "Shining Face" Shift: Why You Should Stop Trying and Start Trusting
The Burnout of "Carnal Religion"
Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
If those words from The Message translation of Matthew 11:28-30 resonate with you, you aren’t alone. For years, many of us have been caught in the exhausting gears of "carnal religion"—the relentless, soul-crushing attempt to save ourselves through our own works, our own willpower, and our own moral "measuring up." It is a heavy, ill-fitting burden that leaves us sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I finally reached a breaking point. I fired myself from religion. I resigned from the "strive harder" club because, frankly, it wasn’t working.
The radical truth is that Jesus didn't come to give us a better set of rules; He came to show us how to take a real rest. He came to invite us into the "unforced rhythms of grace." To move from the labor of religious striving to the rest of the Gospel, we need more than a behavior modification—we need a total shift in how we see God.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The Power of "Of"—Living by Christ's Faith, Not Your Own
There is a massive, life-altering difference between having "Faith in Christ" and living by the "Faith of Christ."
When you focus on your faith in Him, the pressure is still on you. You are the one trying to manufacture enough belief, trying to "work up" a feeling to move a mountain. But the Gospel reveals that we live by the faith of the Son of God who lives in us.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Why "Repentance" is a Dangerous Mistranslation
We’ve been told to "repent" as if it’s a marathon of groveling. But the Greek word metanoia simply means a change of mind.
When we translate it through a religious lens, we fall into the "Re-Penance" trap. Penance is something you do to atone for your sins—confessing, crying, or working to earn back God’s smile. Re-Penance is doing that over and over again. Welcome to the "Church of Condemnation and Flagellation."
3. The "Tree Hugger" Trap: How Our Perspective Fabricated an Angry God
In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve moved from being "naked and unashamed" to "naked and ashamed." Here is the secret: God’s face never stopped shining. God didn't change His mind about Adam; Adam changed his mind about God.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. You Are a Mirror—We Reflect What We Behold
Humans are designed as beings of both persuasion and reflection. We will reflect and manifest whatever we are persuaded to believe is true about God.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Nakedness vs. Clothing: The Guarantee of Immortality
In Scripture, "nakedness" refers to our physical mortality—this body that "groans" (2 Cor 5) under the weight of perishing. To be "clothed" is to be swallowed up by immortality, the redemption of the body as seen in the resurrected Christ.
Conclusion: A New Way to See
The "Shining Face" gospel is the revelation that God adores you. In the famous blessing of Numbers 6, we find the word Barak (Bless). It literally means to get down on one knee to adore.
Think about that: The Creator of the universe "kneels" in adoration of you. He isn't mad at you; He is madly in love with you. His face is permanently shining upon you, regardless of your performance.
Jesus is the "Shining Face" of the Father. He is the light that dawning upon those sitting in darkness. Transformation doesn’t come from trying harder to be good; it comes from seeing how good God is.
What "face" are you currently beholding? Is it the face of a disappointed judge, or is it the shining face of a Father who adores you? The face you see today is the one you will reflect to the world tomorrow. Stop trying. Start trusting. His face is already shining on you.

- Faith is a Gift: According to Romans 12:3, God has "dealt to each one the measure of faith." You don't produce it; it is supplied to you.
- The Paul Example: Even the great Apostle Paul had to "come clean" about his inner striving. In Romans 7, he admits that his own efforts and his own believing weren't working to set him free. He had to quit his religious pedigree (Saul) to become obedient to the faith that Christ supplied.

- The "Sin Soap" Myth: We’ve been taught to use 1 John 1:9 as the "Christian’s daily sin soap," scrubbing ourselves clean every time we slip.
- The Finished Work: Forgiveness is not based on your ongoing confession; it is based on the once-and-for-all sacrifice of the Lamb. Jesus didn't partially take away the sin of the world. He did it once, for all time. Metanoia isn’t about apologizing for the thousandth time; it’s about changing your mind to believe that the work is actually finished.
- The Illusion of Anger: Adam’s "twisted perception" created the illusion of an angry, disappointed God. He hid because he felt judged, not because God had withdrawn His love.
- The First Tree Huggers: Man became a "Tree Hugger," looking to creation (the fig tree) and the flesh for life instead of the Creator.
- Fig Leaves vs. Animal Skins: Adam tried to cover his perceived shame with fig leaves—a source of "great irritation and pain." But God, in His grace, removed the leaves and clothed them in animal skins. He provided the Lamb.

4. You Are a Mirror—We Reflect What We Behold
Humans are designed as beings of both persuasion and reflection. We will reflect and manifest whatever we are persuaded to believe is true about God.
- The Mechanic of Transformation: 2 Corinthians 3:18 tells us that as we behold the glory of the Lord with an unveiled face, we are transformed into that same image.
- The Moon and the Sun: Think of the moon. It has no light of its own; it shines only because it reflects the sun. We are the same. We don’t "try" to be light; we reflect the light we gaze upon.
- The Consequence: If you behold a mad, disappointed, judgmental God, that is exactly what you will reflect to your spouse, your children, and the world. But as we behold and believe the love God has for us, we begin to manifest that same love.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Nakedness vs. Clothing: The Guarantee of Immortality
In Scripture, "nakedness" refers to our physical mortality—this body that "groans" (2 Cor 5) under the weight of perishing. To be "clothed" is to be swallowed up by immortality, the redemption of the body as seen in the resurrected Christ.
- The Holy Spirit as a Guarantee: We aren't just waiting for "spiritual" life; we have it now. The Holy Spirit in us is the "earnest" or "guarantee" that our physical bodies will one day be fully redeemed.
- The "One Thing" Needful: When Jesus spoke to Martha, He said only "one thing" was needful. That one thing is to sit, like Mary, and behold the Beauty of the Lord.
- Defining Beauty: In the original context, "Beauty" isn't an abstract aesthetic. It means:
- Kindness
- Favor
- Delightfulness
- Grace
